What is the Gospel?
The word “gospel” simply means good news. It is the good news of what the Lord Jesus Christ has done on behalf of the sinner. Now the reason we seek to present the good news of the gospel is because of the fact that there is bad news, and that is that every person born into this world is born in sin. We read in Psalm 51:5, “Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.” Sin is the breaking of God’s Holy law. There is no one who keeps the law perfectly, “for all have sinned and come short (missed the mark) of the glory of God.” We must remember that God is perfect, Holy and just. He cannot overlook our sin or sweep it under the carpet. It must be punished for God to remain just.
The Bible tells us in Romans 6:23 that “the wages of sin is death.” This is the price we pay for our sin. And it is not just physical death, but spiritual death also. The Bible describes a place called hell where those who die in sin will spend eternity in physical torment and separated from the goodness of God.
Many seek to remedy this problem of their sin by trying to do earn favour with God. They do this by being religious, or practising good works. But the Word of God tells us as spoken by the mouth of the Lord Jesus Himself, that man cannot even see the kingdom of God unless he is born again (John 3:3). No religion, no chapel or church, no priest or preacher, no saint or scholar, and no work of man can ever make you right for heaven. There is only ONE way to receive forgiveness of sin and be brought into fellowship with God, and that is through saving faith in the finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ on Calvary’s cross.
“Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
John 3:3
The Bible tells us that “God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Here we find that God in love and mercy has made it possible for us to be forgiven of sin and to be reconciled with Him. He has done it be sending His precious Son, our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, to die as a substitute for us. “For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God…” 1 Peter 3:18.
The Lord Jesus bled and died upon the cross, suffering the wrath of God that was due to us, so that all who will repent of and turn from their sin, putting their faith and trust in Him, might be forgiven, brought into communion with God and assured of a home in heaven. Dear friend, you can have the knowledge of sins forgiven, and the full assurance of where you are going when you die, for the Bible tells us in 1 John 5:13 “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.”
Do not be depending upon anything else for eternity other than saving faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, the ONE and ONLY Saviour of sinners.
“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
John 14:6
